This course is an introduction to the most beautiful, wild, and arresting literature from the later Middle Ages. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Sir Orfeo, Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, Langland's Piers Plowman, selected lyrics, and drama will be read in the original language. No prior knowledge of medieval literature is required. Students will learn, with the aid of language instruction and parallel-text editions, to read fascinating, influential works from fourteenth-century England. The course offers an exploration of the literary and linguistic past and the influence of the past on the present.
